Ben Elton (born May 3, 1959) is a British author, screenwriter, playwright, comedian, and director, known for his sharp wit, political satire, and versatility across multiple genres. He rose to fame in the 1980s as a prominent figure in the UK’s alternative comedy scene and later became a bestselling novelist.

Born in London, Elton studied drama at the University of Manchester. He first gained national attention as a writer and performer on the groundbreaking TV comedy The Young Ones (1982–1984), co-written with Rik Mayall and Lise Mayer. He later co-wrote the cult historical sitcom Blackadder, notably the acclaimed second, third, and fourth series alongside Richard Curtis.

Elton’s novels span genres including political satire, dystopian fiction, thrillers, and social commentary. His debut novel, Stark (1989), tackled environmental collapse with humour and edge. Other notable works include Popcorn, which critiques media violence, and Dead Famous, a murder mystery set inside a reality TV show. His books are known for their accessible prose, biting humour, and exploration of modern culture.

Alongside his literary work, Elton has written for stage and screen. He wrote the book and lyrics for the hit musical We Will Rock You, based on the music of Queen, and has written and directed films and TV shows, including Upstart Crow, a Shakespearean comedy series starring David Mitchell.
