About the author:
Douglas Adams (1952–2001) was a British author, screenwriter, and humorist best known for creating the iconic science fiction comedy series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Celebrated for his wit, imagination, and satirical take on life, technology, and the universe, Adams remains a towering figure in modern British literature and pop culture.
Born on March 11, 1952, in Cambridge, England, Adams studied English at St John’s College, Cambridge, where he was active in the university’s Footlights comedy troupe. After graduating, he worked various jobs and wrote comedy for British radio and television, including contributions to Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
Adams first gained fame with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which began as a BBC radio series in 1978 before being adapted into a bestselling novel in 1979. The story follows the hapless Arthur Dent as he journeys through space after Earth’s destruction, guided by an alien writer for a galactic travel guide. The series expanded into five novels, including The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, and Mostly Harmless.
Known for his absurd humour, philosophical undertones, and unforgettable phrases like “Don’t Panic” and “the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42,” Adams brought a unique voice to science fiction. His influence extends beyond literature into TV, film, and even technology—he was an early advocate for computers and the internet.
In addition to Hitchhiker’s, Adams wrote Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and its sequel, blending mystery, sci-fi, and comedy. He also worked on the BBC’s Doctor Who, scripting episodes and developing ideas that shaped the series.
Douglas Adams died suddenly of a heart attack on May 11, 2001, at the age of 49. Despite his untimely death, his legacy lives on through adaptations, fan celebrations like Towel Day, and a body of work that continues to inspire readers and writers around the world.
