Murder at Haweswater is the opening book in the Detective Simon Wayland mystery series set in the English Lake District.
Premise:
Seeking a quieter life and a break from the demanding pace of city policing, Detective Inspector Simon Wayland relocates to Cumbria. His hopes for a tranquil post are quickly shattered following a severe drought in the region. As the water levels of Haweswater Reservoir drop dramatically, the submerged wreckage of a light aircraft is exposed.
The Mystery:
Wayland instantly recognizes the plane's registration tail number—it belongs to an aircraft that mysteriously vanished fifteen years earlier. When police divers investigate the underwater site, they discover human remains inside. Among the victims is an undercover police detective who disappeared during the original investigation along with the plane and its valuable cargo.
The Investigation:
Forced to reopen a long-cold case, DI Wayland and his small local team begin piecing together what really happened fifteen years prior. As they dig deeper into the past, it becomes clear that powerful criminals went to extreme lengths to ensure the truth remained buried at the bottom of the reservoir—and those responsible are willing to kill again to keep their secrets hidden.
