He is most widely recognized for his iconic comedic role as the hapless dogsbody Baldrick in the classic British sitcom Blackadder, and as the enthusiastic face of popular archaeology through his long tenure presenting Time Team.

Early Life and Acting Beginnings:
Robinson grew up in a working-class family in Hackney; his father was a civil servant and his mother a typist. He decided to pursue acting early, leaving traditional schooling behind to attend the Central School of Speech and Drama.
His career actually began as a child star. At just 13 years old, he secured his first professional acting role as a member of Fagin’s gang in the original West End stage production of the musical Oliver!, even occasionally stepping into the role of the Artful Dodger. Following drama school, he spent years refining his craft in repertory theater and working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

Television Success: Blackadder and Beyond:
Robinson’s major breakthrough came in 1983 when he was cast alongside Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder. As Baldrick, Robinson created an unforgettable comedic character, evolving from a somewhat clever servant in the first series to the lovable, turnip-obsessed buffoon famous for constantly proposing a "cunning plan" in later series.
Building on his comedic success, Robinson created, wrote, and starred in the critically acclaimed children's television series Maid Marian and Her Merry Men (1989–1994). He played the cowardly Sheriff of Nottingham and used the show to deliver sharp social satire wrapped in pantomime-style fun.

The Face of Popular History:
In the 1990s, Robinson pivoted to factual broadcasting, becoming the UK's foremost face of accessible history. From 1994 to 2013, he presented Time Team, a groundbreaking Channel 4 series where experts had just three days to excavate and solve archaeological mysteries across the UK. His genuine enthusiasm and ability to translate complex history for a general audience made the show a massive hit.
He expanded his historical presenting with popular series like The Worst Jobs in History, Walking Through History, and Tony Robinson's Crime and Punishment.

Authorship and Activism:
In addition to his television work, Robinson is a prolific author. He has written over 30 children's books, many focusing on history and historical figures, and published a candid, well-received autobiography titled No Cunning Plan in 2016.
Robinson has also been highly active in public life and politics. He is a longtime member of the Labour Party, serving on its National Executive Committee, and was Vice President of the actors' union, Equity.
