The Plot:
The story weaves between three distinct geographical and political fronts, charting a massive, multi-perspective struggle for the future of early England:
Rome:• The narrative begins with Father Asser, an idealistic priest who has been thrown into a papal prison on trumped-up charges of heresy. He is given an unexpected lifeline by the ambitious Cardinal Balotelli, who envisions a unified Christian Europe free from pagan invaders. Balotelli releases Asser and tasks him with a vital, secret mission that sends him back across Europe to his homeland of Wessex.
• Wessex: The aging King Æthelwulf (affectionately nicknamed "Wolf") finds his grip on power slipping. His realm is in crisis, but his feckless children are too busy scheming against each other to unify against the encroaching Viking threat. His eldest sons are itching for a civil war, his highly intelligent daughter, Swift, is blinded by her own sharp political ambitions, and his youngest, most promising son—Alfred—has vanished entirely from the public eye. The arrival of Father Asser with a radical proposition from the Vatican completely disrupts the royal house.
• Lindisfarne: Farther north, a bitter slave girl named Rhiannon harbor a burning hatred for her Anglo-Saxon captors. When she crosses paths with Guthrum, a ruthless "Norlander" (Viking) chieftain hell-bent on completely wiping Wessex from the map, she forms an unholy alliance with him. Together, they launch a bloody path of destruction heading straight for the fractured southern kingdom.
