Plot: (Warning, may contain spoilers):
Published in 2009, The Winter Ghosts is a haunting, atmospheric novella set in the aftermath of the Great War. It is a ghost story steeped in grief, historical tragedy, and the rugged beauty of the French Pyrenees.

The Plot:
The story begins in 1928, ten years after the end of World War I. Freddie Watson is a man shattered by the loss of his beloved older brother, George, who died in the trenches. Unable to move past his grief, Freddie travels through southern France, hoping the fresh air and solitude will heal his fractured mind.

During a fierce winter storm, Freddie’s car skids off a mountain road near the remote village of Nuncq. Seeking shelter, he stumbles into the village and is invited to a local festival. There, he meets a captivating and mysterious young woman named Fabrissa. They spend the night talking, and Fabrissa shares a tragic tale of her own people—the Cathars—who were persecuted in the same mountains centuries earlier.

The Mystery:
As Freddie becomes more enthralled by Fabrissa and the eerie atmosphere of the village, he begins to notice strange inconsistencies:
The Village: Nuncq feels strangely disconnected from the modern world, as if frozen in another era.
Fabrissa’s Story: Her tale of loss and hiding mirrors Freddie’s own grief, but with a terrifying, ancient weight.
The Morning After: When Freddie wakes up the next day, the village he experienced during the storm appears completely different in the light of day, leading him to question his own sanity.

The Themes:
The novel explores the "thin places" between the past and the present. It suggests that deep trauma—whether from the 13th-century Albigensian Crusade or the 20th-century Western Front—leaves a permanent mark on the landscape. Freddie’s journey becomes a quest to discover if Fabrissa was a living woman, a hallucination brought on by his "nerves," or a spirit seeking peace.
