Other Worlds Than These serves as the third and final installment in The Talisman trilogy, written by Stephen King alongside his longtime collaborator Peter Straub (completed by King following Straub’s death in 2022 using their shared notes and plot outlines).
Plot Overview:
Now middle-aged, Jack Sawyer finds himself drawn back onto the road and into the Territories one last time.
A nihilistic death cult has emerged, spearheaded on the American side by Roy Kinneston and Tara Lynne Speckhoffer—a pair of runaway, murderous teenagers (inspired by real-life spree killers Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate). Controlled and infected by dark forces operating from the edge of Mid-World, the cult is tearing through the Territories, committing blood sacrifices to open the Gullet—a sentient, cosmic black hole that threatens to consume the Territories before spilling over to swallow our world.

Despite being physically battered and aging—with every "flipping" transition between realities taking a grueling toll on his body—Jack sets out on foot across the Blasted Lands once again. Along the way, he builds an unlikely team of allies, including a Mafia enforcer accidentally pulled into the fairy-tale realm and a mystic with eyes tattooed on her hands.

Themes:
Echoing its iconic title (drawn from Jake Chambers’ famous line in The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger), the novel structurally returns to the expansive "road trip" feel of The Talisman. Beyond the dark fantasy elements, it acts as an emotional, reflective story about aging, carrying the weight of lost loved ones, and processing the memories of youth.
